The Secret to Getting Rid of Super Lice

Posted on Friday, March 4th, 2016 by Barbara.

Recently there has been a resurgence of news reports regarding the spread of ‘super lice’. With scare inducing headlines such as, Super Lice Now in 25 States! Yours Could Be Next!  The term ‘super lice’ has been given to lice that have become resistant to the pesticide pyrethroid,  which is the active ingredient found in most over-the-counter lice treatment products, such as Nix and Rid. However, ‘super lice’ are not only old news, they have no bearing on the ability to get rid of head lice.

The study which prompted these news reports was done by Kyong S. Yoon, PhD who explained that the momentum toward widespread pyrethroid-resistant lice has been building for years. The first report on this development came from Israel in the late 1990s.  Yoon became one of the first to report the phenomenon in the U.S. in 2000. As a lice removal specialist, I have been discussing this topic with my clients since 2008.

Coincidentally, Yoon’s research was reportedly funded by Sanofi, a pharmaceutical company that owns Sklice lotion, a new treatment product available only by prescription. That raises a red flag for me!  Since these news reports paint a picture of ‘super lice’ being indestructible by over-the-counter products, parents may believe they need to go to their pediatrician to get a prescription for an even stronger chemical treatment.

So I have decided to share the secret to getting rid of ‘super lice’.  Now, the key phrase here is ‘get rid of lice’, because that is what you need to do. Who says the lice need to be killed? Do you want dead bugs in your children’s hair? No!  Whether they are dead or alive, you want them out, right? The nits too. So with that being said, how do you get them out?

The best and most thorough way to get rid of lice is by using a combination of combing and nitpicking. Combing with a good metal nit comb (on wet hair with conditioner) will get out most of the bugs and nits. Follow that with strand-by-strand nit picking to get rid of the rest. Daily combing over the following two weeks will ensure that all lice and nits are removed and the life cycle is broken. (To learn how go to www.liceconnection.com/videos)

Of course, the safest, most effective way to get rid of any lice problem is to hire a professional lice removal specialist. For a list of reasons to use a professional click here: http://www.liceconnection.com/why-use-our-service/

There is no reason to panic. ‘Super lice’, mutant lice or whatever you choose to call them are the same head lice that have been around for centuries. No kryptonite needed!
